Modular construction is playing a key role in the development of our world-scale integrated polymers facility, and we recently sat down with Alan Scott, deputy project manager for Golden Triangle Polymers, to learn more.
What is Modular Construction?
Modular construction, as Alan explained, involves fabricating large sections of a plant, called "modules," off-site in a controlled environment. These modules, which can weigh tens of thousands of tons, are then transported to the construction site and assembled like building blocks.
Think of it like this: Instead of building a house brick by brick on-site, entire walls, floors, and even rooms are pre-built elsewhere and then brought in for final assembly. This approach offers significant advantages in terms of efficiency, safety and quality.
Benefits of Modular Construction
For GTP, the benefits of modular construction are immense. Alan highlighted a few key advantages:
- Reduced On-Site Congestion: By shifting much of the construction work off-site, we minimize vehicle congestion on public roadways and improve overall safety by requiring fewer people to drive to the construction site daily.
- Faster Assembly: Modules arrive pre-tested and ready to install, significantly reducing the time required for on-site hookup and commissioning.
- Improved Quality Control: Off-site fabrication allows for better quality control in a dedicated environment, leading to higher-quality modules.
- Reduced Project Timeline: By streamlining the construction process, modular construction helps keep the overall project on schedule.
Scale and Impact
The scale of modular construction at GTP is impressive. Alan shared that the project involves approximately 62,000 tons of modules – that's equivalent to the weight of over 100 Boeing 747 airplanes. This approach allows for significant progress to be made off-site, accelerating the overall construction timeline.
