GTP Gets Rolling with Onsite Rail System

Golden Triangle Polymers is taking a big step forward in its operational readiness with the construction and operation of an onsite rail. GTP will use this rail yard to safely and efficiently ship polyethylene produced at the facility, as well as receive feedstock for its polyethylene and ethylene operations. Rail cars began arriving onsite in October 2024 and will continue throughout 2025.

Rail System Highlights

  • Dedicated Fleet: GTP will operate a 100% dedicated fleet of railcars marked “GTPX,” specifically designed for transporting polyethylene.
  • High-Volume Output: Several thousand railcars will support the GTP facility, transporting polyethylene and feedstock. The total number of rail cars that can be stored at GTP at one time changes daily based on rail operations and production.
  • Efficient Operations: When designing GTP’s facility layout and the location of on-site assets, several details were considered, including how best to connect with existing infrastructure in the region, compliance with permitting and regulatory requirements, environmental and workplace safety, and engineering considerations to ensure safe and efficient operations for our workforce and the community.
  • On-site Storage and Switching: GTP boasts a substantial storage-in-transit (SIT) yard. A contractor will handle the switching operations within the facility, ensuring smooth and timely movement of railcars.

A Collaborative Approach

GTP’s in-house rail system will connect to a Class I railroad once outside the facility. This rail line is managed by either Union Pacific or BNSF and regulated by federal law. GTP will coordinate with the railroads to schedule the arrival and departure of railcars, typically during a designated window.

Good Neighbor Promise

GTP is committed to being a good neighbor and has taken steps to minimize the impact of its rail operations on the surrounding community. Measures include:

  • Limited Use of Rail Crossing: Rail traffic will only leave the GTP facility at the Foreman Road crossing, minimizing disruption to other public roadways.
  • Noise Mitigation: While 24/7 operations are planned, GTP aims to reduce noise from the rail system by avoiding “kicking cars”.
  • Designated Contacts: For any rail-related issues or complaints, community members can contact the following numbers:
    • For issues within the fence line of Golden Triangle Polymers, contact our public information office at 409-920-4052.
    • For issues outside the fence line, such as rail crossing blockages or horn blowing, contact Union Pacific at www.up.com/notifyup or BNSF at 1-800-832-5452.

Looking Ahead

The arrival of rail cars marks a significant milestone for GTP as it prepares to commence operations. With its efficient rail infrastructure and dedicated fleet, GTP is poised to become a major player in the polyethylene market, contributing to both the local and national economy.
